Iwc Launches New Pilot Top Gun Navy Air Combat Series With Innovative Case Material

January 14, 2019, Schaffhausen, Switzerland-IWC Schaffhausen will present its new pilot TOPGUN navy air combat unit at the Geneva International Horological Fair (SIHH) Watches. The IWC Pilot Series TOPGUN Naval Air Force Porcelain Titanium Double Seconds Chronograph Chronograph Watch is the brand’s first pilot series watch with a Ceratanium® case. The patented material independently developed by IWC is as light and strong as titanium and at the same time as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. IWC will also present for the first time a watch with a sand-colored ceramic case.

IWC has been producing pilot TOPGUN watches since 2007. Its name is derived from the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program of the US Air Force. This instructor course is dedicated to providing excellent naval pilots with flight technology and tactical training. Navy pilots need superb skills. For example, both the pilot and the airplane will experience strong acceleration during sharp turns. Spending several months at a time on an aircraft carrier can also cause loss of personnel and materials. Therefore, the pilot TOPGUN Naval Air Force series watches are especially made of sturdy materials such as ceramics and titanium to meet the specific requirements of first-class fighter pilots. For example, the matte black ceramic case ensures that pilots are not distracted by the sunlight reflected by the watch in flight. The hard, scratch-resistant ceramic is ideal for daily use in cramped aircraft cockpits and can withstand super G forces. Ceramics and titanium are also highly resistant to corrosion, protecting them from moisture and resisting salty sea air.

‘In the new Pilot TOPGUN Navy Air Combat Forces series, we have for the first time applied Ceratanium® to the Pilot’s Watches. This new material, independently developed by IWC, integrates both titanium and ceramic materials. The first time that the brand was able to present our Pilot’s Watch in an all-black design without coating. It includes all watch components such as buttons and pin buckles. The first sand-colored ceramic watch has the same color as the United States The navy pilot’s uniform is a perfect match, and we have thus proven IWC’s exceptional professionalism in materials, ”said Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

The pilot TOPGUN Navy Air Combat Force series includes the following models:
The IWC Pilot’s Watch TOPGUN Naval Air Force Porcelain Titanium Double Seconds Chronograph Chronograph Watch (Model IW371815) is the brand’s first pilot series watch made of Ceratanium®.

Ceratanium® titanium case, black ceramic, black dial, black hands, rubber strap with fabric lining

Ceratanium® independently developed by IWC is a pioneering and innovative composite material that perfectly combines the advantages of two materials, titanium and ceramic. This patented material is as lightweight as titanium and not easily damaged, while being as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. There are other features that set it apart: including excellent hypoallergenic properties, a high degree of corrosion resistance, and a unique matte black appearance.
The base material of Ceratanium® is a special titanium alloy. The manufacturing process of this alloy involves many steps and is quite complicated because the raw materials must have ultra-high purity. The first is to make embryos to shape various watch case components. Then came the furnace fire. During this process, oxygen diffuses into the material, causing a phase change, and then the metal surface becomes a ceramic material. With this unique surface modification process, the material not only has the typical characteristics of ceramic hardness and scratch resistance, but also shows a striking and matt black.

Unlike traditional coating processes such as DLC that are still in use today, the ceramic surface of Ceratanium® is not separated from its carrier like the former, but is permanently attached to the main material. In addition to its superior material properties, Ceratanium® matt black is also distinctive. As a result, five years of research and development have just begun, and customers’ desire for a ‘pure matte watch’ has been fulfilled. Ceratanium® will be used for the first time in the new IWC pilot series TOPGUN Navy Air Force watch, and it is also the first time that the brand has used this material for non-limited models.
